Digitizing furniture using three-dimensional modeling

What is three-dimensional furniture modeling?

Three-dimensional furniture modeling is the process of digitizing furniture: in other words, creating a 3D object that can then be used in a wide variety of software applications. Once modeled, furniture can be visualized in virtual reality applications or 3D rendering and animation software such as 3dsMax or Maya. Three-dimensional models can also be shared with interior designers who will reuse your models, passively promoting you.

Let’s take a look at how Le Studio 3D digitizes your furniture: you’ll understand what we need to work with, and what results you can expect.

The manufacturing process for three-dimensional modeling

Although we can model furniture from dimensional drawings, it’s easiest to model furniture from photos. Front, side, back and top shots make the task easier: we can then retrace the model “in the photos”. The modeler then recreates the shape of the furniture, like a sculptor on a block of clay.

Once the shape has been faithfully reproduced, three-dimensional modeling focuses on reproducing the textures of the furniture. We need to respect the patterns of a fabric and its natural reflections, reconstitute the look and tones of a wood, restore the grain, silkiness or smoothness of a material… In some cases, we start with a zoomed-in photo of the texture, then transform it into a texture ball that can be applied to the 3D model.

Sometimes, the photo of the texture is not usable or simply doesn’t exist. Based on precise indications or approximate models, we recreate the right texture by trial and error. However, this is an extreme method that we prefer to avoid in order to ensure product conformity.

As three-dimensional modeling is based on a craftsman’s approach, where the artist’s touch is of the utmost importance, it may be necessary to make a few alterations to achieve the final result, a preview of which you can see below.

3D furniture modelling: endless applications

Although we can produce a wide range of objects, from a sailboat to a finely chiseled piece of jewelry, Le Studio 3D specializes in three-dimensional furniture modeling. The ever-increasing demand for this service, combined with our team members’ training in product design, naturally led us down this path.

Our many years of experience in this field now enable us to produce a wide range of furniture, from a simple velvet chair to an oak table, not forgetting a garden lounge, an ergonomic cushion or an office chair with innovative shapes. The full value of this know-how is realized when the three-dimensional furniture modeling is then set in an environment that enhances the furniture, as you can see in the following visuals.

3D furniture modeling also enables us to reproduce furniture that is only at the prototype stage. This is an extremely interesting advantage for manufacturers, who don’t have to physically build the furniture to know whether it will please or not. This means they can offer items in their catalog or on their website that will only be produced to order.

We’ve worked for a Swedish brand that wanted to test a table prototype, a West Indian coffee table manufacturer and, more recently, a French manufacturer of Moroccan sofas. The latter even created its entire website based on computer-generated visuals, and now sells its sofas using a 3D configurator.

The complexity of 3D furniture modeling lies not only in faithfully reproducing the shape of the furniture. In fact, it’s usually the texture of the object that sometimes poses difficulties. In fact, it’s the texture of the object that sometimes poses the greatest difficulty: the appearance of a fabric or wood, the way it reflects light, the grain of a surface, the mesh and relief of a texture (commonly known as bump mapping). And this work has to be done even more meticulously when you want to zoom in on that photo. This is what we’ve been able to reproduce with this bed base, rendered in 4K resolution (move mouse over image for zoom):

As you can see, whatever merchandise you’re marketing, we’ll be able to reproduce and enhance it visually. All we’ll need is a few photos of the item, an explanatory diagram or images of its textures, so that we can carry out the three-dimensional furniture modeling. We’ll take care of the rest!
