Advantages and disadvantages of 3D photo montage
The main advantage of 3D photomontage is its simplicity. An experienced designer can easily do the job. All that’s required is to cut out the furniture using image-editing software such as Photoshop, i.e. to cut out the image precisely so that the furniture stands out from the image.
The next step is to find the background image: of course, it must be free of copyright, to avoid any legal proceedings! Once the background image has been selected, the graphic designer simply inserts the cropped piece of furniture into the image. A few image retouches and you’ve got a more or less successful 3D photo montage.
Obviously, such an operation is not very expensive. But what about the result? The drawback of 3D photo montage is the quality of the rendering: you’ll never get as perfect a realism as a real photo or a visual produced by a 3D visualization agency. The main difference? Luminosity, the grain of the photo, the harmony of tones, the weight of shadows… in short, everything that makes a photo realistic.
Why choose 3D visualization?
Unlike 3D photomontage, 3D visualization of furniture involves fully modeling the piece of furniture, then inserting it into an extremely realistic virtual environment. This has a number of advantages:

Unlike 3D photomontage, setting the mood of a piece of furniture on a computer allows you to light the scene evenly: by placing a window and light sources wherever you like, you’ll get all the shadows and tones throughout the room, realistically.

3D photomontage uses the angle from which the photo of the furniture was taken: if the furniture is shot from ¾, you won’t be able to feature it from the front or side on the final visual. Thanks to 3D modeling of the furniture, you’ll have the freedom to create several visuals, from every possible angle of view. You’ll also be able to zoom in and out or move the lens back.
3. Infinite variations:
A 3D photo montage is, by definition, an assembly between the original photo and the background photo. Consequently, for each variation you wish to make, you will need to choose new source photos and possibly other background photos.
