How to select a 3D rendering agency based on a portfolio?

3D rendering agency help architects and interior designers to present and win presentations with excellent visuals. However, not all 3D providers offer the same level of service. Their mistakes can result in a rendering quality far below what the customer expected. Sometimes the colors aren’t right, the scale isn’t in proportion, or the overall rendering is rough and doesn’t do justice to the design.

Of course, any 3D rendering agency will promise to deliver stunning quality and present the concept in all its glory. None of them will say, “Well, you know, we’re still struggling with V-Ray, but we can’t wait to give it a try. What do you think?”

How can you make the right choice under such conditions?

  • Trial and failure: rely on intuition and accept that a certain amount of error is inevitable on the road to success.
  • Examine the company’s portfolio before making contact. Analyze the quality of the visuals the 3D rendering agency has already produced, and contact only those that meet all your expectations.

The second option seems cheaper and more reliable. But how do you properly analyze a 3D rendering?

Actually, this is something you can learn in 5 minutes. Just read these 5 simple criteria and use them every time you look at a 3D visual design studio‘s portfolio.

5 criteria for understanding the rendering quality of a 3D rendering agency

Now let’s imagine you’ve opened a 3D designer’s Portfolio page. Your first glance at the renderings doesn’t immediately make you scream in horror, so you proceed to a more in-depth analysis.

#1. When choosing a 3D renderer, look for neutral daylight

Sometimes, the 3D visual appears cold and lifeless. Everything’s in its place, but objects have a bluish tint and the overall impression is unpleasant. Watch out for this unfavorable detail when choosing a 3D rendering agency.

This happens when the camera balance and V-Ray settings (rendering plugin for 3D Max) are deactivated. Daylight should be neutral – as in the 3D visualization above. The light beams coming through the window are pure white, without a hint of blue. As a result, the interior is bathed in sunlight, lively and welcoming.

#2. Night lighting for a 3D rendering should be cool, artificial light proportionate

When the 3D artist doesn’t follow this rule, 3D objects appear unnaturally yellow. For the same reason, the landscape near the window looks surreal and lifeless. Now, if the night light entering the room is a cool blue, the 3D rendering is beautiful, cohesive and the colors – flattering.

To create a pleasant nighttime environment, 3D artists should use the Vray night HDRI mode instead of VraySky, and adjust the Vray Light parameters. Take a look at this video based on a multitude of 3D visuals. The penumbra light interacts with the warm light in the room. The overall atmosphere is cosy and the interior décor harmonious.

The ability to adjust the light on 3D Max is definitely a mark of quality to consider when evaluating a 3D rendering agency. Because it can basically kill or create the image!

#3. A 3D rendering agency always creates light from a well-defined source

Sometimes, there’s a kind of “ghost” light in the 3D rendering that comes from nowhere. And you may also find that the lighting is too strong in the relevant areas. It doesn’t look natural, because the materials reflect more light than they receive from the source – the sun, the chandelier or the spotlights. The visual is then said to be “burnt”.

The origins of this error can vary. Most often, the 3D artist decides to animate the scene and add additional lighting with Photoshop at the post-production stage, or to augment the existing lighting. Whatever the case, it’s important to remember that all light must come from a visible source and have a corresponding brightness.

Take a look at the image above, created by a reputable 3D rendering agency. You won’t find any light spots or materials that look overexposed. Reflective surfaces shine evenly and the amount of light bouncing off is perfectly natural. This rendering could be mistaken for a photograph!

#4. The 3D visualization agency chooses to center the composition of the image

When there’s no center in the composition, the visual or architectural perspective appears empty and random. A bit like a photo taken by accident – with the swipe of a finger. This means that the 3D rendering agency has not applied the rule of thirds.

The rule of thirds is to divide the 3D visualization into 9 even parts by 4 lines – 2 horizontal and 2 vertical. And focus objects must be placed at the intersection of these lines. As a result, the 3D interior rendering is full of impact and harmony.

#5. The presence of all objects in the scene is functionally and stylistically justified.

A 3D rendering agency worthy of the name will never take this question lightly. Because even a perfect lifestyle scene can be marred by a detail that doesn’t match its style! A mixer tap instead of a rustic kitchen faucet in a Roussillon or Midi ambiance, or a jacket hanging in the bathroom instead of a more appropriate robe – these can seriously compromise the rendering.

Details matter, and the staff at a 3D rendering agency know this. So, if the project is an architectural home for a high-flying businessman, the wardrobe should be filled with clothes of a matching style. And if the house is located in Miami, palm trees should be seen through the window, not Parisian willows or birches. In this way, you allow the customer to imagine living in such a villa. They’ll look at the rendering more like a photograph of their future life than a simple digital image of a design project.
