2019 decorating trends put colors back in the spotlight

Every year, interior designers, furniture manufacturers and distributors of decorative objects have to scour the various deco design sites in search of the year’s decorating trends. Missing out on what’s hot in the coming seasons can have a negative impact on their sales.

It’s imperative for decorators to know what will attract their customers, and for craftsmen to design objects with trendy lines and materials.

So, for those who weren’t lucky enough to attend the Maison et Objet show, or for those looking for the 2019 decorating trends, here’s a quick rundown of the decorating ideas for the coming seasons!

2019 decorating ideas: brands impose style

Much to the chagrin of some, today’s interior decorating is dominated by a host of brands. Every season, Ikea, La Redoute Intérieurs and Zara Home unveil their catalogs, and all the design websites pick up on their creations to illustrate what the 2019 decorating trends will be.

Several styles are emerging this year, while others are becoming more established:

  • Ethnic decor is as popular as ever;
  • The colors on trend this year are a subtle alliance of green, blue and violet;
  • Retro furniture and decorative objects are increasingly popular;
  • Scandinavian ambience gets a makeover thanks to Japandi and Scandicraft styles

This image, taken from the website made.com, sums up the different styles of the coming year: silky fabrics like the velvet of the sofa, noble materials like the marble of the side table or the wood of the parquet floor, shades of green embellished with touches of purple or blue and a touch of exoticism brought by the green plant.

The marriage of blue, green and violet marks the 2019 decorating trends

Year after year, a farandole of colors invites itself into interiors. Kitchens, living rooms, bedrooms… walls are adorned with new tones to follow the decorating trend, much to the delight of professionals. Because new colors mean matching furnishings and, consequently, renewing some of your furniture and decorative objects.

This time, all shades of green are in the limelight, with hints of blue or violet. Decorative objects in natural materials such as wood or rattan, as well as green plants, will add an exotic touch to the ensemble.

Interior design inspiration: ethnic and exotic

Exoticism is precisely one of the decorating trends for 2019, with ethnic-inspired decoration. Whether your heart is set on Central America, Africa or Asia, decorative objects from elsewhere will be resolutely in vogue this year. Once again, these trendy decorative objects can be used to enamel a living room or bedroom in shades of blue or green:

2019 decorating trends: retro style asserts itself

To get even more in line with the current craze, you could place vintage furniture in your decor. Having already gone out of fashion a few decades ago, many models of chairs, armchairs and desks are making a much-appreciated comeback among French consumers.

Colonial furniture can be used to accentuate a retro decor. Corduroy sofas from the 70’s or 60’s style seats will find their place if their colors match the tones used. Cane elements can be placed throughout the room to accentuate the vintage effect. For a much more modern touch, place rattan chairs in a sober, uncluttered kitchen.

Japandi and Scandicraft renew the Scandinavian ambience

What is the Japandi style?

Professionals have noticed: consumers are beginning to tire of the Scandinavian style. Designers have come up with a solution, combining Japanese minimalist style with the natural simplicity of Scandinavian decor. The newcomer is called Japandi, and everyone’s asking for more.

Japandi decor is all about using lots of light in a minimalist, functional aesthetic. In terms of color, while Scandinavian style tends to banish black, Japandi style allows it, provided it’s accompanied by neutral or natural tones. In terms of materials, it is characterized by noble, durable materials such as oak, stone, metals and plants. Japandi is inspired by Wabi Sabi, a philosophy that appreciates beauty in imperfection. As such, designers opting for Japandi will be able to use time-aged metal or wood accessories.

2019 decorating trends: is Scandicraft renewing the Scandinavian genre?

Some will define Scandicraft as the culmination of the Scandinavian style, while others will see it as a return to the style’s roots, and still others as a simple revisiting of the “mountain” style.

At first glance, the Scandicraft style is characterized by the use of raw materials: log coffee tables and long-pile rugs. But Scandicraft is more than that. This style still adopts the codes of Scandinavian style, with its sought-after purity, but advocates “ethical” decorating. In other words, we prefer to use natural materials, handmade if possible. For example, a room could be decorated with reclaimed wooden objects, cane armchairs or woven hanging baskets.
